ALPINE CHALLENGE 2024
4 DAY CLASSIC CAR REGULARITY RALLY
June 16th to 21st, 2024
The new Alpine Challenge covers 1000kms over four rallying days in some of the most glorious scenery in Europe. We provide five night’s accommodation in superb hotels including breakfast and evening meals.
Using our Virtual Marshal system we track the cars and time them on Regularity Sections. Outside the sections participants have time to stop and admire the views so you don’t just see the magnificent scenery in your rear mirror. We also provide mechanical assistance to give you the best chance to complete the course.
Starting in the Ace Café in lovely Luzern the Challenge tracks east on the first day into Liechtenstein over a 197km drive. Day two is slightly longer but heads into the depth of the Alps into Merano. Day three is a loop around Merano before returning to the same hotel. Day four, our last on the road, takes in the Stelvio pass on your way to Andermatt and well preserved Alpine town. In the evening we will have our gala meal and prize giving.
ARRIVE – June 16, 2024
Arrive Seeburg Hotel, Luzern. Documentation and official welcome to the Alpine Challenge.
RALLY DAY 1 – June 17, 2024 – 197kms
Start: Ace Café Luzern
Finish: Hotel Schatzmann, Triesen, Liechtenstein
We are flagged off from the Ace Café Luzern, the epicentre of motoring in this quiet Swiss town. Today, on setting off from the shores of the beautiful Lake Lucerne, we can look forward to driving around some of the most celebrated landscape in the world – the world-famous Swiss Lakes, as we head into the tiny principality of Liechtenstein.
On this event no two days are the same as whatever the season the weather clashes with the mountains so that even in summer the weather can range from rainy and foggy to warm and sunny without notice.
The rapid variations in the weather will make for some fantastic pictures as the vast skies will be reflected in the lakes as we pass.
Nestled on the green slopes fringing the lakes there are the colourful Swiss towns and hamlets with their alpine red rooves, harbours and occasional steamers.
Keep an eye out for the cattle, sheep, goats and even alpacas summer-grazing on the highest alp, under the languid care of their herdsmen. We run our Regularities each day on the quiet roads and not the more major ones. Using our Virtual Marshal system you have time in between the competition section to enjoy the countryside.
We arrive in Triesen passing the 12th century Vaduz Castle, the royal family’s residence, on the way to the Hotel Schatzmann.
RALLY DAY 2 – June 18, 2024 – 386kms
Start: Hotel Schatzmann
Finish: Hotel TBA, Merano
This mid-summer Alpine rally continues in Lichtenstein, the sixth smallest nation in the world and home to the world’s sixth wealthiest monarch! Bordered by Switzerland and Austria and famous for its alpine landscapes, sleepy villages, winter sports and medieval castles, Lichtenstein sits in the Upper Rhine valley of the European Alps.
In the morning we head north to the Boedele pass, then Schwarzenberg passing small skiing centre after skiing centre as we climb and descend the Tyrol. After lunch in the Innsbruk we head south to our evening stop in Merano. Crossing the Brenner pass we enter Italy and ascend the Statale pass followed by the Jaufenpass and the
Giovo pass before reaching Merano. Cars will need good brakes and we strongly recommend everyone brings at least a couple spare brake pad sets for this event.
On today’s stretch expect the traditional twists and bends of alpine roads with a superb range of mountains in every direction. Green slopes and hairpin bends, wooden chalets and churches, meadows of cows and horses, all abound. This should be a heavenly summer’s day with heavenly views.
RALLY DAY 3 – June 19, 2024 – 286kms
Start: Merano
Finish: Merano
Today’s circular drive offers up the best of South Tyrol, showcasing the breath-taking beauty of the Dolomites. Our starting point, Merano, has a long history dating back to pre-Roman times. Today its is known for its wine and the chess opening Merano Variation!
Today’s drive on part of the Great Dolomites Road, takes us past some truly fabulous Alpine scenery and ancient towns. We skirt the busy town of Bolzano and loop round the Schlern-Rosengarten National Park.
The baroque-style cathedral of Brixen is one of the jewels in the Tyrolean crown, and just to the north of the Sciliar-Catinaccio wildlife reserve we pass the Dolomite town of Chisua-Klausen. With its pretty houses, Gothic churches, traditional inns and wide river running through Chisua-Klausen is a fairy-tale town on a thrilling drive.
RALLY DAY 4 – June 20, 2024 – 302kms
Start: Hotel Merano
Finish: Hotel Crown, Andermatt
A beautiful drive ahead today with the bonus of the Stelvio Pass and its 24 hairpins. We’ll be driving along the fertile plains between the mountains whose lower slopes are dotted with castles like the Kastabell Castle and the Castle Monte Sant Anna, and pass through historic medieval towns like Glorenza/Glurns in the Upper
Venosta Valley.
We traverse the Albula Pass, the Fluela, the Bernina, the Stelvio and Umbrail into Andermatt our finish for the day, and the rally.
There’ll be hairpin bends through the pine forests of the Swiss National Park, home to deer, marmots, chamois, red foxes, golden eagles, mountain hares and ibex. Wolves, lynx and brown bears very occasionally be seen! Along the valley roads in between the mountains are idyllic little towns like Trun and Altdorf which, with their church spires and grazing cattle, seem like somewhere from another more peaceful era.
